How to Play Klondike Solitaire

The complete guide to the world's most popular card game.

Objective

Move all 52 cards to the four foundation piles, one per suit, stacked in order from Ace to King. Once every card is on a foundation, you win.

Setup

The game uses a standard 52-card deck dealt into the following areas:

  • Tableau — Seven columns of cards. The first column has 1 card, the second has 2, and so on up to 7. Only the top card of each column is face-up.
  • Stock — The remaining 24 cards placed face-down. Draw from here when no other moves are available.
  • Waste — Cards drawn from the stock are placed here face-up.
  • Foundations — Four empty piles, one for each suit (hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades).

How to Play

Moving Cards in the Tableau

You can move a face-up card (or a stack of face-up cards) onto another tableau column if the bottom card of the stack is one rank lower and the opposite color. For example, a red 6 can go on a black 7.

When you move a card that reveals a face-down card beneath it, that card is automatically flipped face-up. Empty tableau columns can only be filled with a King (or a stack starting with a King).

Drawing from the Stock

Click or tap the stock pile to draw cards to the waste pile. You can draw one card at a time (Draw 1) or three cards at a time (Draw 3). The top card of the waste pile is always available to play.

When the stock is empty, click it to recycle the waste pile back into the stock.

Building the Foundations

Move cards to the foundations starting with the Ace of each suit, then the 2, 3, and so on up to the King. You can move cards from the tableau or waste pile to the foundations.

Tips & Strategies

  1. Always play Aces and 2s immediately. They never help in the tableau and belong on the foundations right away.
  2. Uncover face-down cards first. Prioritize moves that flip hidden cards, as this gives you more options.
  3. Keep columns balanced. Avoid emptying a column unless you have a King ready to fill it.
  4. Use undo freely. Solitaire Den has unlimited undo, so experiment with different move sequences.
  5. Don't rush cards to the foundation. Sometimes keeping a card in the tableau is more useful for building sequences.
  6. Draw 1 is easier than Draw 3. If you're learning, start with Draw 1 mode in the settings.
